He has recently returned to industry to develop and deploy applied machine learning techniques at Google.
内容摘要:The lecturer will discuss the combination of artificial neural network (ANN) character classification, a large-coverage, loosely-applied language model, and context-driven search over character segmentation, word segmentation, and word recognition hypotheses that made the Newton's Print Recognizer actually work. He will also discuss issues related to recognizer training, generalization, segmentation, language models, geometric context, probabilistic formalisms, etc., that had to be addressed and resolved in order to obtain sufficient recognition accuracy to be genuinely usable. Additionally, he will present some unique innovations in the application of ANNs to the problem of character classification for word recognition, including multiple representations, normalized output error, negative training, stroke warping, frequency balancing, and error emphasis, all of which are interpretable as methods for reducing prior biases in the training data, and all of which significantly improve the performance of the network classifier when embedded in such a system. Other practical issues, such as quantized (one-byte) weights for the neural network and dictionary stemming will also be addressed.

Dr. Zhang has published over 350 refereed technical publications, among which over 210 papers appear in refereed journals in a broad scope of fields including design and mechatronics, manufacturing, informatics, human-machine systems. His h-index (GS) is 37 and i10-index (GS) is 194. Dr. Zhang currently holds 8 patents.

内容摘要:All examples of natural intelligence have come about through the evolution of nervous systems in an ecosystem. Evolution provides a powerful engine for exploring an enormous space of possibilities. Nervous systems are the ubiquitous natural solution to processing information in an intelligent fashion. And intelligence only makes sense within a context--within the ecosystem in which it confers an evolutionary advantage. He will discuss how the field of Artificial Life offers a way to use the same approach in the pursuit of Artificial Intelligence, suggesting a means of ratcheting AI up through a spectrum of intelligence along with information and graph theoretic methods of quantifying and understanding the resulting mechanisms of machine intelligence.

内容摘要:随着经济全球一体化的不断深入发展,供应链成员间的信息非对称问题成为影响供应链绩效的主要原因之一。本文主要在信息以及成本非对称的背景下,讨论两个终端企业(一个自产自销,一个从上游批发产品),在供应链中信息共享策略的方案,包括:信息优势企业如何根据市场需求情况确定是否信息共享(若是,则如何共享);信息劣势企业如何根据对方透露出的市场信息来决策订货量;上游供应链如何决策批发价,从而控制整个供应链的博弈态势,使下游零售商在竞争中更为主动。

内容摘要:商业信用作为一种企业短期融资的主要来源之一,可以实现供应链中资金资源的重新配置,提高资金利用率,从而促进供应链整体协调,创造供应链价值。本文分别研究了商业信用以及商业信用和收入共享组合合同下供应链各成员企业的决策,探讨了两种合同对供应链绩效的影响。

Lecture 1: Some Really Big Questions
Abstract: What is Life? What is Intelligence? What is Artificial Life and how can it help us develop a better understanding of biological life and intelligence? The speaker will introduce the historical and modern field of Artificial Life and its many facets, present some of the field’s seminal results using computer simulation, and discuss some of the underlying methods of evolutionary computation.
Lecture 2: A Spectrum of Life & Intelligence
Abstract: We will look at examples of non-human intelligence, in support of a thesis that life and intelligence are best thought of as a near-continuum, and examine the suggestion that information theory and complexity may yield methods for quantifying these elusive phenomena. The speaker will also introduce core ideas underpinning theories of a neural basis of behaviour and introduce my neuro-evolutionary simulator, Polyworld.
Lecture 3: Evolution of Neural Complexity—Structure & Function
Abstract: This talk will show results from a study of the evolution of neural complexity and discuss its relevance to questions posed by Gould, McShea, Dawkins, and others on the evolution of biological complexity. The speaker will also combine information theoretic analysis of neural complexity with graph theoretic analysis of neural networks to illuminate the relationship between network structure and function. Results will suggest fairly tight bounds on the structures capable of supporting complex neural dynamics, and reveal a fortunate convergence between purely functional evolutionary pressures and expected physical evolutionary pressures (such as wiring length and brain volume) that together give rise to natural intelligence.
